PEP: The 72-Hour Window That Can Save Lives | |
A medical procedure called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is used to prevent HIV infection in those who may have been exposed to the virus. It entails taking several antiretroviral drugs for a predetermined amount of time. PEP usually consists of a three-drug regimen, although depending on the patient's particular requirements or the HIV strain, other medications may be included. This is a summary: 1. Standard PEP, or 3-Drug PEP Regimen The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advise using this most popular form of PEP. Reasons for Using It: It works well to stop HIV from spreading. Easy adherence and few adverse effects. 2. 4-Drug PEP Regimen This kind is less popular and might be applied in certain situations. When It's Employed: Whether the person who was exposed might have come into contact with HIV strains that are resistant to drugs. In high-risk circumstances, such as when a source has a history of treatment failure and is known to be HIV-positive. 3. 5-Drug PEP Regimen A 5-drug regimen is highly unusual and rarely used in clinical practice. However, it may be considered in extremely specific cases where there is: A high likelihood of multi-drug-resistant HIV exposure. Need for intense viral suppression due to significant risk factors.
