What is a Melt Flow Index Tester?

The Melt Flow Index Tester is a laboratory instrument used to measure the flow rate of a thermoplastic polymer when it is heated to a specific temperature. This test helps determine the viscosity of the polymer, which directly affects the material’s ability to be molded or extruded into various shapes. In essence, the MFI gives manufacturers an understanding of how a polymer behaves under heat and pressure, making it easier to predict how it will perform during processing.

The test involves forcing a predetermined amount of material through a standardized die under controlled conditions of temperature and load. The time it takes for the polymer to flow through the die is recorded, and the result is expressed as the Melt Flow Index (MFI), typically in grams per 10 minutes (g/10 min). A higher Melt Flow Index Testing indicates a more fluid material, while a lower MFI suggests a thicker, less flowing polymer.
