2 types of fear! | |
Two types of fear! Fear/reverence of God and fear of man! Fear of man shows a lack of faith in God. The Bible mentions two specific types of fear. The first type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. The second type is a detriment and is to be overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. (Matthew 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.) However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgment of all that God is capable of, which comes through knowing Him and His attributes. Fear of the Lord brings with it many blessings and benefits. It is the beginning of wisdom and leads to good understanding. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline. Furthermore, fear of the Lord leads to life, rest, peace, and contentment. It is the fountain of life and provides a security and a place of safety for us. Thus, one can see how fearing God should be encouraged. (Psalm 25:14, 111:10; Proverbs 1:7 [What do fools despise?], Proverbs 8:13, 14:26-27, Proverbs 19:23). However, the second type of fear mentioned in the Bible is not beneficial at all. This is the “spirit of fear” mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. A spirit of fearfulness and timidity does not come from God. Where does it come from you ask? If it can't come from God, it must come from somewhere else (Satan, man, etc.). Isaiah 66:4 I also will choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them; because when I called, none did answer; when I spake, they did not hear: but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not. [When people do things mentioned in the third verse, God will send them strong delusion which causes their fears to increase (ungodly fear). (2 Thessalonians 2:10-12). Why? Because when He speaks through His Word, many do not listen. They go their own way following false teachings and traditions of men or deny He even exists; not a good idea]. No need to be afraid! There are many places in the Bible where God encourages us, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness; be not afraid; fear not”. Often we fear the future and what will become of us, the unknown. But Jesus reminds us that God cares for the birds of the air, so how much more will He provide for His children? “Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows”. God tells us not to be afraid of being alone, of being too weak, of not being heard, and of lacking physical necessities. These admonishments continue throughout the Bible, covering the many different aspects of the spirit of fear. These are just some of those verses: (Psalm 121:7; Isaiah 41:10; Matthew 10:31; Luke 10:19, 21:18; 2 Thessalonians 3:3). The words “fear not” occur about 63 times in the KJV Bible. I wonder why? Continue to study His word, change the unknown to the known. No need to fear what a man says, this man or any other man! Who do you place your trust in? See Jeremiah 17:5-8.
