Shame and Ashamed. SHAME, n. A painful sensation excited by a consciousness of guilt, or of having done something which injures reputation; or by of that which nature or modesty prompts us to conceal. Shame is particularly excited by the disclosure of actions which, in the view of men, are mean and degrading. Hence it it is often or always manifested by a downcast look or by blushes, called confusion of face. ASHA'MED, a. Affected by shame; abashed or confused by guilt or a conviction of some criminal action or indecorous conduct, or by the exposure of some gross errors or misconduct, which the person is conscious must be wrong, and which tends to impair his honor or reputation. Jeremiah 3:25 (KJV) We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth us: for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God. (Sin causes shame). Romans 10:11 (KJV) For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. (This is how to get rid of shame). Romans 1:16 (KJV) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (Believers should never be ashamed of the Gospel. It is God’s power unto salvation). Isaiah 54:4 (KJV) Fear not; for thou shalt not be ashamed: neither be thou confounded; for thou shalt not be put to shame: for thou shalt forget the shame of thy youth, and shalt not remember the reproach of thy widowhood any more. (Ashamed about past deeds when you were younger? Don’t be. We all make mistakes in our youth). 1 Peter 4:16 (KJV) Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. (No reason to feel ashamed, be happy and glorify God instead). Isaiah 50:6 (KJV) I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting. Isaiah 50:7 (KJV) For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. (These 2 verses show us how Christ faced shame; a great example to follow. See Hebrews 12:2 also). 2 Timothy 2:15 (KJV) Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. (Definitely no need to feel ashamed for studying God’s Word; seek His approval by doing so). Hebrews 11:16 (KJV) But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city. (God is not ashamed to be our God; He has prepared much for us; I certainly hope you are not ashamed of God). | |
