HIV symptoms can differ greatly from person to person and can also alter as the illness progresses. In certain situations, people can not exhibit any symptoms for a long time. Chronic Symptoms: Following the first stage, HIV may go into latent phase, during which time it may not show any symptoms for a number of years. Nevertheless, the virus continues to cause immune system deterioration. People may have sporadic symptoms including fever, chills, diarrhea, weight loss, and enlarged lymph nodes throughout this period. Opportunistic Infections: People are more vulnerable to opportunistic infections as HIV advances and their immune systems deteriorate. These infections can affect various organs and systems of the body and may include pneumonia, tuberculosis, candidiasis (thrush), cytomegalovirus (CMV), toxoplasmosis, cryptococcal meningitis, and certain types of cancers such as Kaposi's sarcoma and lymphoma.
