Types of Indian post offices
Indian Post offices are divided into three classes. (a) Headquarters of Indian post offices. (b) Secondary offices, including E.D. Sub-offices, and (c) E.D. Branch post offices. The first two classes of offices normally deal with all types of postal activities. Facilities are generally provided at branch Indian post offices for core items of postal work such as mail delivery and dispatch, booking of registered items and parcels accepting SB deposits and making SB withdrawals and issuing and paying postal orders, albeit in a limited way. Thus, as far as the public is concerned, there is generally no difference in the character of the service rendered by the secondary offices and central post offices, except for some P.O. Savings bank operations. Some post offices do not carry out all types of postal activities. The restrictions imposed will be found in the list of Post Offices published as Part III of this Guide. Note: - Central offices in major cities are the responsibility of official officers and such central offices are referred to as first class head office, first class post office head, they exercise all the powers of a post office superintendent in relation to the their own offices. Note: - Payable value items and money orders will not be registered at the Army post office address
