After much anticipation, Toyota has finally unveiled an update for the Fortuner SUV. Last year, in 2023, they introduced the new Hilux with a mild-hybrid powertrain and promised that the same technology would come to the Fortuner. Now, the hybrid version of the Toyota Fortuner is set to arrive in India soon! The New Hybrid Fortuner The Toyota Hilux and Fortuner share the same platform, engine, and transmission options. So, adding hybrid technology to the Fortuner was a straightforward task for Toyota. The hybrid setup pairs a 2.8-liter diesel engine with a 48V mild hybrid system. The engine delivers 201bhp and 500Nm of torque, while the 48V battery pack adds 16bhp and 65Nm of torque. However, the main aim of introducing hybrid tech isn't to increase power. Instead, Toyota aims to improve fuel efficiency by 10% with an updated start/stop system. Additionally, the waterproofed battery enhances water wading capacity, and regenerative braking aids in controlled downhill driving. Other Highlights The new Toyota Fortuner, launched in South Africa, comes with hybrid technology and several new features. It now includes Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and a 360-degree camera, addressing some key requirements. The design of the Fortuner has also been updated, resembling India's Toyota Fortuner Legender.
