Cancer is becoming more common in India, especially among women. For many years, cervical cancer was the main concern for women’s health. But now, breast cancer is more common than cervical cancer among Indian women. Around two lakh cases of breast cancer are found every year in India. Dr. Ashish Gupta, a trained, American board-certified medical oncologist and Chief of Medical Oncology at Unique Hospital Cancer Centre, Dwarka, India, shared information about the most common cancers affecting women.

Breast Cancer
Breast cancer tops the list, affecting many women in India. Regular self-checks and screenings are crucial for early detection. Mammograms are recommended every 1-2 years for women over 40 to help spot any abnormalities. Treatment varies from surgery to chemotherapy, depending on the stage.

Cervical Cancer
Caused primarily by HPV, cervical cancer is a significant concern. HPV vaccination can prevent infections, reducing the risk. Routine Pap smears aid in early detection, allowing timely interventions like surgery or chemotherapy.

Ovarian Cancer
Often challenging to detect early due to subtle symptoms, ovarian cancer requires attention. Genetic counseling is beneficial for those with a family history. Treatment usually involves surgery and chemotherapy, with ongoing research into targeted therapies.

Uterine Cancer
Linked to hormonal imbalances, uterine cancer demands prompt attention to abnormal bleeding. Diagnosis methods include endometrial biopsy and imaging. Treatment may include surgery, radiation, or hormonal therapy, depending on the cancer type and stage.

Lung Cancer
Increasingly concerning among Indian women, lung cancer is often associated with smoking or environmental pollutants. Early detection through imaging tests is vital—treatment options range from surgery to targeted therapies, tailored to specific genetic mutations.

Prevention and Treatment
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, avoiding tobacco, and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables play crucial roles in prevention. Regular exercise and weight management contribute to overall well-being and lower cancer risks. Encouraging regular screenings like mammography and pap smears is essential for early detection.

Advancements in personalized therapies and immunotherapies offer promising treatment options. Collaboration among healthcare providers, researchers, and policymakers is vital for innovation and better treatment outcomes.
Addressing common cancers in women requires a holistic approach encompassing prevention, early detection through regular screenings, and advancements in treatment. We can work towards a healthier future for women in India and beyond with collective efforts.
