USMLE Step 3 is the final examination in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) series. This two-day exam assesses your ability to apply medical knowledge and understand key concepts in biological and clinical sciences essential for the independent practice of medicine. Step 3 places a specific focus on patient management in ambulatory settings. When to Take USMLE Step 3 Typically, Step 3 is taken after completing medical school and residency training, as it is a requirement for obtaining an unrestricted medical license in the United States. Exam Structure: Step 3 comprises two parts: Part 1: This section consists of 232 multiple-choice questions covering various topics such as patient management, history and physical examination, lab studies, diagnosis, prognosis, and pathophysiology. Part 2: This part includes 16 computer-based case simulations. Each simulation presents a patient scenario where you will make decisions regarding the patient's care. Eligibility Criteria for USMLE Step 3 To be eligible to take USMLE Step 3, you must meet the following requirements: Successful completion of Steps 1 and 2 CK. Graduation from a non-American or non-Canadian medical school listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS), meeting the ECFMG eligibility criteria. Alternatively, you must hold the equivalent of a medical degree from a non-American or non-Canadian medical institution. Completion of a recognized US graduate medical education (GME) program and fulfillment or near-completion of at least one postgraduate training year, to be eligible for state board licensure. International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must also obtain certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) before completing Step 3. Application Process: To apply for USMLE Step 3, follow these steps: Create an account on the USMLE website and complete the online application. Pay the required application fee and submit documentation of your eligibility, including your medical school diploma and transcripts. Once your application is approved, you can schedule your exam appointment at a Prometric USMLE Step 3 test center across the United States.
